India vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2023: The much-anticipated India vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2023 encounter ended in a damp squib as rain forced the match to be abandoned without a ball being bowled in the second innings. India had posted a competitive total of 266 in their 50 overs, thanks to a brilliant partnership between Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya, who rescued the team from a precarious situation.
India, who were playing their first match of the tournament, had won the toss and elected to bat first on a green-tinged pitch in Pallekele. However, they soon found themselves in trouble as Pakistan’s pace trio of Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah ripped through their top order. Afridi claimed four wickets, including the prized scalps of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya. Rauf and Shah also chipped in with three wickets each, as India slumped to 66 for 4 in the 22nd over.
It was then that Kishan and Pandya joined forces and staged a remarkable recovery. The duo added 138 runs for the fifth wicket, playing with aggression and style. Kishan, who was making his Asia Cup debut, scored 82 off 81 balls, hitting nine fours and three sixes. Pandya, who was returning from an injury layoff, smashed 87 off 90 balls, with six fours and five sixes.
The pair was finally separated in the 37th over, when Rauf returned to dismiss Kishan. India’s tailenders could not add much to the total, as they were bowled out for 266 in 49.3 overs.
Pakistan, who had won their opening game against Nepal, were confident of chasing down the target. However, they never got a chance to bat, as rain started pouring down during the innings break. The umpires waited for more than two hours, hoping for the weather to clear up, but it only got worse. Eventually, they had no option but to call off the game and split the points between the two teams.
The result meant that both India and Pakistan remained unbeaten in the group stage. Pakistan qualify for the super 4 stage and India will need to beat Nepal in their next game to progress.
