Sri Lanka’s spin all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga will miss the ODI World Cup 2023 due to a hamstring tear, according to a report by India.com. Hasaranga, who was also absent from the Asia Cup because of the same injury, has until September 28 to be replaced in the final World Cup squad.
Wanindu Hasaranga is arguably Sri Lanka’ best spinner and his absence will severely impact their chances of progressing to the later stages of the tournament. He is also very handy with the bat as seen by his performances kin the IPL and LPL.
Hasaranga was in superb form in the Lanka Premier League, where he captained the B Kandy Love team. He scored the most runs (279) and took the most wickets (19) in the tournament. He also won several awards, such as the most sixes, highest run-getter, highest wicket-taker, and Player of the Tournament. His absence will be a huge blow for Sri Lanka, who are already struggling with injuries to other key players.
Spinner Maheesh Theekshana was injured during the Asia Cup, but he is expected to recover in time for the World Cup. However, pace bowler Dushmantha Chameera’s participation is doubtful as he is also nursing an injury and has not played since the Lanka Premier League.
These injuries could affect Sri Lanka’s chances of doing well in the World Cup, which will start on October 5 in India. England and New Zealand, the finalists of the last edition, will play the opening match. Sri Lanka will face South Africa in their first match on October 7th.
