Rohit Sharma Named Captain for T20 World Cup 2024

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah declared that Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian team at the upcoming T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies. The announcement was made during the renaming of the Saurashtra Cricket Association stadium to the Niranjan Shah stadium in Rajkot.

Shah expressed confidence in Rohit Sharma’s leadership, stating,

“We may have lost the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. But we won hearts there by winning 10 matches in a row. I would like to say that I am confident that India will lift the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy at Barbados.”

Shah made these comments in the presence of Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar, Head Coach Rahul Dravid, and Rohit himself.

The decision marks a change in India’s white-ball captaincy, which has been a topic of debate. Hardik Pandya was named skipper in January 2023, following his successful leadership of the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League, where he led the team to the title in 2022 and the final in 2023. However, Rohit’s form improved during the ODI World Cup, while Hardik suffered a major injury, keeping him out of action since.

“Hardik will continue to be the vice-captain at the T20 World Cup. Hardik got injured at the ODI World Cup, so who else would we hand over the captaincy to? The manner in which Rohit batted against Afghanistan; I don’t think we should question the decision. Rahul Dravid will be the coach of the team at the World Cup,” Shah explained.

Jay Shah on Virat Kohli’s absence

Shah also expressed the BCCI’s support for Virat Kohli during his personal break, stating, “If a player seeks personal leave in a career spanning 15 years, it’s not an issue. Virat is not a player who would ask for leave without reason. We should be backing our player.”

Regarding managing player workload during the IPL leading up to the World Cup, Shah emphasized that the BCCI’s decisions are final, and player workload is always managed in the best interest of the players.
