IPL Chairman's Big Announcement on Tournament Start Date!

The anticipation for the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is building among fans, but there’s a twist this year. The IPL 2024 is scheduled to take place during India’s general elections, adding a unique dimension to the tournament’s planning and scheduling.

While the exact dates for the IPL 2024 haven’t been confirmed yet, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal has indicated the “most likely” starting time for the tournament. Dhumal stated that the IPL is expected to commence at the end of March. However, with the general elections scheduled for April, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will coordinate closely with the Indian government to finalize the fixtures and ensure the smooth conduct of the tournament in India.

“We will work with the Indian government, agencies to make sure that the league takes place in India. We are waiting for the schedule of the general election to be announced and then we will plan accordingly…like which state will host what game at the time of election will be planned that way,” Dhumal told news agency IANS.

“It (IPL) will most likely start from March end… and general elections are in April, so we will work it out with the help of the government,” he added.

According to a report by Cricbuzz, the IPL 2024 is likely to commence on March 22 and conclude on May 26. The final schedule will be confirmed once the dates for the general elections are officially announced. The IPL 2024 will be closely followed by the Women’s Premier League and the T20 World Cup 2024, making it a busy and exciting period for cricket enthusiasts.

This isn’t the first time the IPL has coincided with a Lok Sabha election year. The tournament was previously held during national polls in 2009, 2014, and 2019. While the 2009 and 2014 editions were shifted outside India, the IPL 2019 was successfully conducted in India despite the elections.

The upcoming IPL promises to be a thrilling event, not just for cricket fans but also for those interested in the intersection of sports and politics in India. Follow 12cricket.com for the latest news and updates from IPL 2024.
