Pat Cummins to Lead Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2024

Pat Cummins has been named the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad for the upcoming IPL 2024 season, taking over from Aiden Markram, who led the team in 2023.

This will be Pat Cummins’ first leadership role in the IPL, as well as in top-flight T20 cricket. His appointment follows a successful stint as Australia’s captain, where he guided them to victory in the World Test Championship and the 2023 ODI World Cup, both finals against India.

The change in leadership provides SRH with flexibility in their overseas player selection. With Cummins as the overseas fast bowler, they can now include new signings Travis Head and Wanindu Hasaranga, along with Heinrich Klaasen, in the playing XI. The squad also includes overseas quicks Fazalhaq Farooqi, Marco Jansen, and Glenn Phillips.

Pat Cummins had skipped IPL 2023 to focus on international cricket but returned for the 2024 season auction, where he became the first player in IPL history to be bought for INR 20 crore (USD 2.4 million approximately). SRH initially bid INR 20.50 crore (USD 2.47 million approximately) for Cummins, but Kolkata Knight Riders surpassed this with a bid of INR 24.75 crores (USD 2.98 million approximately) for Mitchell Starc. Interestingly, Cummins had previously been part of the KKR squad from 2020 to 2022.

This will be SRH’s third captain in three seasons. Kane Williamson led them to eighth place in 2022 before being released ahead of the 2023 season. Under Markram’s captaincy, SRH finished last in 2023, winning only four of their 14 league games. Markram scored 248 runs at a strike rate of 129 in IPL 2023 and remains in the SRH squad for the upcoming season. In South Africa’s T20 league, Markram led the Sunrisers Eastern Cape franchise to consecutive titles in 2022 and 2023.

In addition to the change in captaincy, SRH appointed Daniel Vettori as their head coach for the 2024 IPL season, replacing Brian Lara, who had taken over from Tom Moody for IPL 2023. Dale Steyn was also replaced by James Franklin as the bowling coach.

SRH will kick off their IPL 2024 campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on March 23, followed by a match against Mumbai Indians in Hyderabad on March 27.
