IND vs AFG: India cruised to an eight-wicket victory over Afghanistan in their second World Cup match in Delhi, thanks to a stunning century by captain Rohit Sharma. Rohit smashed 131 off 84 balls, the fastest hundred by an Indian at a World Cup, and the most by any batsman in the tournament’s history.
Rohit’s masterclass made light work of Afghanistan’s total of 272-8, which was built on a solid partnership of 121 between Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai. Hashmatullah scored 80 and Azmatullah made 62, but their efforts were not enough to challenge India’s formidable batting line-up.
India reached their target in only 35 overs, with Rohit and Ishan Kishan putting on 156 for the first wicket. Kishan contributed just 14, while Rohit dominated the bowling with his exquisite timing and placement. He hit 13 fours and seven sixes, and reached his century in just 63 balls.
Rohit was eventually dismissed by Rashid Khan, but Virat Kohli continued the chase with an unbeaten 55. Kohli added 49 with Rohit and another 68 with Shreyas Iyer, who finished on 25 not out. India won with 15 overs to spare, and maintained their perfect record in the tournament.
Afghanistan, on the other hand, suffered their second defeat in two games, after losing to Bangladesh by nine wickets in their opener. They showed some improvement with the bat, but their bowling lacked penetration and variation. Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the Indian bowlers, taking 4-39 in his 10 overs.
India will now face Pakistan in a blockbuster clash in Ahmedabad on Saturday, while Afghanistan will hope to bounce back against England.
