Zaheer Khan is in talks with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) about a mentorship role. The franchise wants a former India player with T20 expertise. This followed Gautam Gambhir’s departure.
Zaheer, who was previously the Mumbai Indians’ director of cricket from 2018 to 2022, is in high demand. Two other franchises have expressed an interest in acquiring his knowledge. LSG has been without a mentor since Gambhir departed late last year. Gambhir, who played a key role in the Kolkata Knight Riders’ third IPL title win in 2024, is now the Indian national team’s coach. Morne Morkel, former South African pacer and LSG bowling coach, has joined Gambhir’s coaching staff.
Zaheer was linked with Indian Team
Zaheer was originally seen as a potential bowling coach in Gambhir’s new Team India, specifically to mentor the team’s young and future pacers. Even during his playing career, Zaheer was noted for coaching and teaching the Indian team’s new fast bowlers.
Zaheer Khan’s possible involvement with the Indian team did not materialize, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selected Morkel, unmistakably on Gambhir’s recommendation.
Zaheer will work with Lucknow Super Giants head coach Justin Langer and a formidable coaching staff that includes Adam Voges, Lance Klusener, Jonty Rhodes, and others. Another well-known coach is rumored to be joining the Sanjiv Goenka-owned organization, however the specifics remain unclear.
