Former Australian cricket player Brett Lee is certain that the Indian cricket team is in good hands going forward, especially with Rahul Dravid handing the baton.
Gambhir retired from cricket and became the mentor for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Last but not least, he led the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to IPL victory in the 2024 season during his tenure as their mentor.
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah made the announcement on last Tuesday, officially introducing Gambhir as the man in charge of all forms. The two-time World Cup winner is set to begin his second innings with the Indian team in the forthcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka.
Brett Lee on Gautam Gambhir’s appoitment
Brett Lee, Gambhir’s former teammate at KKR, welcomed the news.
“He’s done a terrific job every time he’s had an opportunity,” Lee shared with The Times of India. “The Indian Premier League title with KKR is the best example. He’s always been at the top of his game, finding a way to unite players and graft the team together. His aggression and winning attitude will undoubtedly benefit India.”
Lee also reserved praise for Rahul Dravid, who led India to T20 World Cup glory in his final assignment.
“Congratulations to Rahul for finishing on a high,” Lee added, acknowledging Dravid’s significant contribution to Indian cricket.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Cricket has confirmed a one-day postponement in India’s six-match white-ball series against the host nation. India will land in Sri Lanka on July 22 for the T20I and One Day International (ODI) series. The T20 titans will clash in Pallekele, while the entire ODI series will be played in Colombo’s Premadasa Stadium in August.
