Virat Kohli’s Fiery Clash with Sam Konstas: What Really Happened?

Tensions flared during the fourth Test in Melbourne as former Indian captain Virat Kohli found himself in hot water after a heated exchange with Australian debutant Sam Konstas. The dramatic incident, which took place on Day 1 of the match, resulted in Kohli being fined 20% of his match fee and receiving a demerit point under the ICC Code of Conduct.

What Triggered the Clash?

The incident unfolded as players switched sides following the 10th over of Australia’s innings. While crossing the pitch, Kohli and Konstas accidentally bumped shoulders, sparking a verbal confrontation. Australian batter Usman Khawaja stepped in to defuse the situation before it escalated further.

On-field umpires Joel Wilson and Michael Gough, backed by third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Shawn Craig, intervened and filed a charge against Kohli for his conduct.

ICC’s Verdict

Kohli was found guilty of violating Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which prohibits inappropriate physical contact. Match Referee Andy Pycroft recommended a penalty, which Kohli accepted without challenging.

“Inappropriate physical contact has no place in cricket,” the ICC stated, categorizing Kohli’s actions as a Level 1 offense. This spared him from a potential suspension, typically reserved for more severe Level 2 violations.

Konstas Plays It Cool

Despite the heated moment, Sam Konstas downplayed the incident in his post-match comments.

“Virat accidentally bumped into me—it’s just part of the game,” the young Australian told Channel 7. “We both got caught up in the emotions of the moment.”

Konstas channeled the energy from the encounter into his performance, smashing two boundaries and a six off Jasprit Bumrah in the next over. The debutant went on to notch a brilliant half-century before falling to Ravindra Jadeja.

Virat Kohli’s Record Tarnished

This marks Virat Kohli’s first disciplinary offense in two years. Along with the financial penalty, he received a demerit point, which will remain on his record for 24 months.
