Sri Lanka World Cup Squad: Sri Lanka have named their 15-member squad for the World Cup, which will be held in India from September 30 to October 15. The squad, led by Dasun Shanaka and vice-captained by Kusal Mendis, was announced on Tuesday, 26 September, just two days before the deadline set by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The most notable omission from the squad is star spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, who has been ruled out of the tournament with a hamstring injury. Hasaranga, who was the leading run-scorer and wicket-taker in the Lankan Premier League last month, suffered a thigh strain during the playoffs and missed the Asia Cup. The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) had tried to ensure his participation in the World Cup, but he might have to undergo a surgery that could keep him out of action for at least three months.
Hasaranga was a key performer for Sri Lanka in the World Cup Qualifiers in June and July, where they secured their spot in the main event. He took 22 wickets in seven games, the most by any bowler in the tournament.
Another player who will miss the World Cup due to injury is fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera, who has not recovered from his shoulder injury. However, Sri Lanka have some good news as well, as pacers Dilshan Madushanka and Lahiru Kumara are back in the squad after missing the Asia Cup due to injuries.
Sri Lanka have a balanced squad for the World Cup, with a mix of experienced and young players. The top-order will consist of Pathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne, and Kusal Mendis. The middle-order will have Sadeera Samarawickrama, Kusal Perera, Charith Asalanka and Dhananjaya de Silva.
The squad also has plenty of all-rounders, with skipper Shanaka leading the way. Dhananjaya, Dunith Wellalage and Asalanka are the other options. The pace attack will feature Kasun Rajitha, Dilshan Madushanka, Lahiru Kumara and promising youngster Matheesha Pathirana. The spin department will be spearheaded by Maheesh Theekshana, with support from Wellalage, Dhananjaya among others.
