India is now in a new era for Test cricket. At just 25, Shubman Gill is set to lead India in the upcoming Test series against England. Gill was announced as the new Test captain just a few weeks after Rohit Sharma retired, making him the youngest in India since Kapil Dev and Sachin Tendulkar.
He has taken a major step with this promotion. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, R. Ashwin and Mohammed Shami are not part of India’s squad. The squad is now captained by a player who started playing cricket in Punjab and has often been regarded as the next great Indian batter.

Shubman Gill’s Rise to Test Captaincy
Early Signs of Brilliance
Shubman Gill made his name in 2014 when he helped create an ML Markan Trophy record with his incredible score of 351. His family moved to Mohali to assist him in continually improving his skill.
U-19 World Cup Stardom
An excellent performance at the 2017-18 U-19 World Cup helped build Gill’s name. It was his unbeaten 102 versus Pakistan in the semi-final that captured everyone’s attention across the country. Though Prithvi Shaw started to stand out early on, it was Gill who played consistently well.
Test Debut and Domestic Consistency
Gill first appeared in Test cricket in December 2020, as India returned to the cricket world stage by winning the series in Melbourne. People began to compare his play to Kohli because of his graceful use of the front foot and his coolness at the wicket. At this stage, Shubman Gill hasn’t dominated the way some do, but he has played very well, scoring 1,893 runs in just 32 Tests.
Captaincy: A Turning Point for Gill
Picking Gill over Bumrah for this series was a good decision. How much Jasprit Bumrah was used was a worry and Shubman Gill’s talent as a captain was spotted by coach Gautam Gambhir and selector Ajit Agarkar.
India last triumphed in a Test series in England back in 2007. The start of another World Test Championship cycle places great pressure on Shubman Gill. It is important that he guides the young players and achieves the winning results expected of him.
But it looks like Gill is prepared. Shreyas Iyer’s calmness, skill and brain for cricket look like they can help India long-lastingly, not just here and now.
“We’re investing in Shubman Gill for the next five-six years,” said Ajit Agarkar.

Final Thoughts
Less than a decade separates Shubman Gill’s rise from teen star to captain of the Indian Test team. With India’s Test fortunes at a low point, he is in a position to write history. It’s more about proving your character and leadership skills than just testing how good you are.
If he achieves his goal, Shubman Gill will become known as someone who changed Indian Test cricket as well as an outstanding batter.
