Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have announced that Shreyas Iyer will resume his role as the captain of the team for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. Iyer had missed the entire 2023 season due to a back injury. Nitish Rana, who had stepped in as the interim captain in Iyer’s absence, will continue as the vice-captain of the team.

The franchise confirmed the news on their social media platforms on Thursday, expressing their delight at having Shreyas Iyer back at the helm. KKR CEO Venky Mysore praised Iyer’s character and recovery from his injury, and also thanked Rana for his leadership in the previous season. He said that Rana will support Iyer in every possible way for the benefit of the team.

KKR CEO Venky Mysore said: “It was indeed unfortunate that Shreyas missed IPL 2023 due to injury. We are delighted that he’s back and at the helm as Captain. The way he has worked hard to recover from his injury and the form he has displayed is a testament to his character.” “We are also grateful that Nitish had agreed to step into Shreyas’s shoes last season and did a great job. There’s no doubt Nitish as Vice Captain will support Shreyas in every possible way for the benefit of #TeamKKR.”

Iyer also expressed his happiness at returning as the captain of KKR, and lauded Rana for his commendable job in 2023. He said that Rana’s appointment as the vice-captain will strengthen the leadership group of the team.

KKR, who had finished seventh in the IPL 2023 points table with six wins from 16 matches, will be hoping to bounce back in the next season under Iyer’s guidance. The franchise had also roped in former captain and two-time IPL winner Gautam Gambhir as their mentor last month. Gambhir, who had retired from cricket in 2018, had previously mentored Lucknow Super Giants for two seasons.
