Rishabh Pant to lead Delhi Capitals in IPL 2024 after recovering from car accident

Rishabh Pant

Delhi Capitals (DC) have announced that Rishabh Pant will be their captain for the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The wicket-keeper batsman, who suffered a serious car accident in December 2023, is set to make a comeback to professional cricket as the leader of the franchise.

Pant, 26, is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and is expected to be fully fit by the end of February. He will have to get a clearance from the NCA officials to participate and keep wickets in every IPL match.

The DC management confirmed the news to Cricbuzz, saying that Pant was their first choice for the captaincy role. They also dismissed the rumours that Pant would only play as an ‘Impact Player’, stating that he will be on the field throughout the innings.

Pant’s absence was felt by DC in the previous IPL season, when they finished at the bottom of the table with only five wins out of 14 games. David Warner, who was appointed as the interim captain, could not inspire the team to perform well.

DC have retained only one other wicket-keeper in their squad, Abishek Porel, and have released Phil Salt. They are not keen on buying another keeper in the upcoming auction, which will take place in Dubai on December 19, but they may still look for a backup option.
