Ishan Kishan opts out of South Africa Test series due to mental fatigue

India’s wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has withdrawn from the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa, citing personal reasons. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that KS Bharat will replace him in the squad.

According to a report in Indian Express, Ishan Kishan requested a break from cricket last week, after experiencing mental fatigue from constant travelling and lack of game time. He informed the team management and the selectors about his decision, which was accepted by all parties.

“He informed the team management that he is having mental fatigue and wants a break from cricket for some time. Everyone agreed to it,” a source told.

Ishan Kishan, who made his Test debut against West Indies in August, has been on the road since January 3 this year. He was part of the Border-Gavaskar series, the ODI series against Australia, the World Test Championship final, the tour of West Indies, the Asia Cup, the ODI World Cup, and the T20I series against Australia. However, he did not get many opportunities to showcase his skills, as he played only 11 matches across all formats in this period.

Ishan Kishan is the third player to be ruled out of the South Africa Test series, after Ruturaj Gaikwad and Mohammed Shami. Gaikwad suffered a finger injury during the ODI series, while Shami is recovering from an ankle injury at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

The first Test between India and South Africa will start on Tuesday, December 26, at Centurion.
