IPL News: Shamar Joseph’s Sensational Move to Lucknow Super Giants!

Shamar Joseph

West Indies fast bowler Shamar Joseph has made a significant move in his career by joining the Lucknow Super Giants as a replacement for England’s Mark Wood. The IPL franchise announced this development, stating that Joseph will join the team for a hefty sum of INR 3 crore.

The decision to bring in Shamar Joseph comes after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) withdrew Wood, a centrally contracted player, from IPL 2024 to manage his workload ahead of the T20 World Cup in June. England’s busy schedule, which includes hosting West Indies and Sri Lanka for Tests in the home summer, has led to the ECB’s cautious approach towards their players’ participation in the IPL. This decision follows a similar move involving Jofra Archer, who was prevented from participating in the IPL 2024 auction as part of his injury rehabilitation plan leading up to the T20 World Cup.

Lucknow Super Giants had initially signed Mark Wood in the auction before the 2022 season for a substantial amount of INR 7.50 crore. However, he missed that season due to an elbow injury. In IPL 2023, Wood played four matches and impressively picked up 11 wickets at an average of 11.82.

Shamar Joseph’s Remarkable Rise

Shamar Joseph made a memorable debut for West Indies in the drawn series against Australia, immediately dismissing Steven Smith with his first ball in Test cricket. His heroic performance came in the second Test at the Gabba, where he bravely took a seven-wicket haul despite an injured foot, leading West Indies to a dramatic eight-run win. This victory was particularly significant as it marked West Indies’ first Test win in Australia since 1997.

Joseph had been signed by Dubai Capitals for the ongoing ILT20 season before West Indies’ tour of Australia but was later ruled out due to a toe injury sustained in the Brisbane Test when struck by a Mitchell Starc yorker. However, his outstanding performance in Australia has earned him a contract with Peshawar Zalmi in the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL), starting on February 17.

Despite his limited experience in T20 cricket, with just two professional games under his belt and no wickets yet, West Indies white-ball coach Daren Sammy has expressed confidence in Joseph’s potential inclusion in the T20 World Cup squad. Sammy has praised Joseph, stating that the fast bowler has “created a good headache” for the selectors.

Lucknow Super Giants boast a strong fast-bowling lineup, including Naveen-ul-Haq, Mohsin Khan, David Willey, Shivam Mavi, Yash Thakur, and Yudhvir Singh. They also have all-rounders Marcus Stoinis, Kyle Mayers, and India’s Under-19 World Cupper Arshin Kulkarni, who can contribute with both bat and ball. Despite being relatively new to the IPL, Lucknow Super Giants have been one of the top-performing teams, reaching the playoffs and finishing third in both the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
