IPL Mega Auction Locked in After 2024 Season!

IPL Mega Auctions

IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal has dropped a bombshell, confirming that a IPL mega auction is on the cards after the 2024 season. Brace yourselves for IPL 2024, which is all set to light up the cricketing world on March 22, with Chennai Super Kings, the reigning champions, locking horns with Royal Challengers Bangalore at the iconic Chepauk Stadium.

IPL Mega Auction History

IPL mega auctions, held every three years, are like a reset button for teams, allowing them to completely revamp their squads. Last year, the mini auction in Dubai saw Australian speedster Mitchell Starc become the IPL’s most expensive player ever. Speaking exclusively to Sportstar, Dhumal spilled the beans on the upcoming mega auction for the 2025 season, revealing that teams will be able to retain 3-4 players before embarking on a rebuilding spree.

“We will definitely have the mega auction, where you get to choose three-four players and then you have a new team. That makes it more interesting and that format will continue,” said Dhumal. He expressed optimism that the mega auction will be a blockbuster, just like its predecessors. The last mega auction in 2022 witnessed 204 players being sold for a whopping Rs 551 crore.

“Hopefully, the mega auction will be as grand and thrilling as before, especially with new talents emerging not just from India but from other countries as well. Teams like Afghanistan have also reaped the benefits as they were able to showcase their talent,” added Dhumal.

In terms of the IPL 2024 schedule, Dhumal confirmed that the tournament will culminate on either May 25 or 26, taking into consideration the 2024 T20 World Cup, which is slated to kick off on June 7. With the Lok Sabha elections potentially overlapping with the IPL, only the fixtures for the first two weeks of the tournament have been released.
