IPL 2025 Retention Rules: What Teams Need to Know

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has just shaken things up with some exciting updates to its retention rules for the 2025 season. These changes are designed to keep the competition fierce while ensuring teams can maintain some stability. Let’s break down what’s new and what it means for the upcoming season.

IPL 2025 Retention Rules Explained

Six Players Can Be Retained

Each team can now hold on to up to six players from their current squad, either through direct retention or by using the Right to Match (RTM) card. Out of those six, teams can keep up to five capped players (Indian and overseas) and a maximum of two uncapped players. This gives teams the flexibility to build a core squad while keeping an eye on promising young talents.

Right to Match (RTM) is Back!

After a brief absence, the Right to Match (RTM) option is making a comeback in the 2025 auction. With RTM, franchises can match the highest bid on a player they previously had, which means teams now have an extra shot at keeping their key players, even if other franchises try to swoop in with higher bids.

Impact Player Rule Stays

The popular Impact Player rule, which has added a fresh tactical twist to the game, will stay for the 2025 season. This rule allows teams to make a player substitution during a match, offering more strategic options and making the game even more dynamic.

Bigger Auction Purse

Franchises will have more money to play with this year, as the auction purse has been bumped up to INR 120 crore (about USD 14.33 million), a cool INR 20 crore more than last season. This means teams can spend more on top talent and build stronger squads without breaking the bank.

Boost in Match Fees and Salaries

Players are in for a payday too, with match fees now set at INR 7.5 lakhs per game. If a player features in all the league matches, they could pocket up to INR 1.05 crore on top of their franchise contract. This bump in earnings is a great incentive for players to perform consistently throughout the season.

What This Means for Teams

These rule updates are bound to change how teams approach the auction. With the ability to retain six players and the return of RTM, franchises can lock down their core group while still being competitive at the auction. The increased purse and match fees also mean teams will be more financially flexible, allowing them to assemble top-tier squads and keeping the competition as fierce as ever.
