England’s Squad for 2023 Cricket World Cup: England has officially declared the 15 players who will represent them in the upcoming 2023 Cricket World Cup, set to commence next month. This selection comes with a significant change from the initial squad that was announced last month.
In the previous provisional squad, England made some notable choices. English superstar Ben Stokes made a comeback, while promising young batter Harry Brook and star fast bowler Jofra Archer were left out.
However, an unexpected twist occurred when Jason Roy, a key batsman, suffered back spasms and had to miss the four-match series against New Zealand. This opened the door for Harry Brook to rejoin the One Day International (ODI) squad. Although Brook had a somewhat average series against New Zealand, scoring 25, 2, and 10 in his three appearances, his remarkable progress as an international cricketer earned him a spot on the team.
Jason Roy, who has scored two centuries in six ODIs in 2023, might still join the squad facing Ireland later this week. The deadline for making final squad changes for the World Cup is September 28th.
Meanwhile, Ben Stokes made headlines by coming out of ODI retirement and delivering a sensational performance. He scored a remarkable 182 runs off 124 balls against New Zealand, setting a new record as the highest individual score by an England men’s player in ODIs.
During the New Zealand series, Dawid Malan solidified his place in the team by leading the run charts and securing his fifth ODI century. Adil Rashid, who only played one game in the New Zealand series due to cramps, has also been cleared to join the World Cup squad.
On a different note, seamer Mark Wood is currently recovering from a sore heel he suffered at the end of the Ashes series and has not played competitive cricket since the final Ashes Test.
Luke Wright, England Men’s National Selector, expressed confidence in the selected squad’s ability to win the World Cup in India. He noted the exceptional talent within the white-ball cricket group and the tough decisions made, including Jason Roy’s exclusion and Harry Brook’s inclusion.
Jofra Archer, who is still in the recovery phase, will travel with the squad to India as a reserve player, where he will continue his rehabilitation.
Here’s England’s Squad for 2023 Cricket World Cup: Jos Buttler (captain), Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Mark Wood, and Chris Woakes. The team is gearing up for an exciting and competitive campaign in the upcoming tournament.
