ENG vs SA: England’s hopes of defending their World Cup title are in jeopardy after they were crushed by 229 runs by South Africa in Mumbai.

The world champions need to win all their remaining five group games to secure a spot in the semi-finals.

It was one of England’s worst performances ever, as they were hampered by sickness and injuries in the scorching heat. South Africa piled up 399-7, the highest total England have ever given away in a 50-over match.

Heinrich Klaasen smashed a century off 61 balls and Marco Jansen added 75 off 42 balls as England had no answer.

England’s batting was equally dismal, as they collapsed to 68-6 and then 100-8. Only some late hitting from Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson saved them from a bigger defeat.

But it was still the biggest loss by runs in their ODI history, as they were bowled out for 170 in 22 overs.

England’s campaign is in disarray and they face Sri Lanka on Thursday. They also have to play India and Australia, who could knock them out of the tournament.
