The excitement of cricket fans turned into frustration and anger as the ticket booking website BookMyShow failed to handle the surge in demand for the tickets for India’s World Cup matches. The tickets for the Mastercard holders, who had an exclusive and privileged access to book the tickets a day before the general public, went up for sale on August 29. However, within minutes, the website crashed and left many fans disappointed and furious.
What was the offer?
The BCCI had partnered with BookMyShow as the official ticketing platform for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, which is scheduled to start from October 5 in India. The Mastercard holders were given a special offer to book the tickets for the highly anticipated India matches in the upcoming World Cup, a day prior to the general public.
The offer was valid for all the nine group stage matches of India, including the blockbuster clashes against Pakistan, Australia and England. The tickets were priced between Rs 500 and Rs 10,000, depending on the category and the venue.
What went wrong with BookMyShow?
The offer was supposed to start from 12 pm IST on August 29 and last till 11:59 pm IST on August 30. However, as soon as the clock struck 12 pm, thousands of fans logged onto BookMyShow to secure their tickets for the World Cup matches. The website, however, could not cope with the massive traffic and crashed repeatedly.
Many fans faced errors while trying to access the website or while booking their tickets. Some fans reported that they were charged multiple times for the same ticket or that their tickets were cancelled without any reason. Some fans even claimed that they received confirmation emails for tickets that they did not book.
How did fans react?
The fans who were eagerly waiting to book their tickets for the World Cup matches were left fuming at the “worst possible experience” by BookMyShow. They took to X to express their outrage and dissatisfaction at BCCI and BookMyShow. Here are some of the reactions:
