Why did ICC Ban Sri Lankan Cricket Board?

Why did ICC Ban Sri Lankan Cricket Board? Sri Lanka’s cricket woes continue as they suffer a dismal performance in the Cricket World Cup 2023, which they barely qualified for after playing in the qualifiers. They had also faced a humiliating defeat by India in the Asia Cup 2023 final. Despite having an advantage of playing in familiar Indian conditions, the Lankans failed to show any spark in the ODI World Cup.

Their injury problems added to their troubles. They ended their World Cup campaign with a disappointing 2 wins out of 9 matches, and received more bad news. This bad news also impacts their women’s cricket team. The Sri Lanka Cricket board was suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for government interference in cricket matters in Sri Lanka.

“The ICC Board met today and determined that Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a Member, in particular, the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference in the governance, regulation and/or administration of cricket in Sri Lanka,” the ICC release stated. Before Sri Lanka’s last league match against England, the sports minister of Sri Lanka Roshan Ranasinghe dismissed the entire national cricket board due to the poor performance of the men’s team. However, the supreme court of Sri Lanka issued a 14-day stay on the dismissal, which means Shammi Silva remains the chairperson of the Sri Lanka Cricket.

According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, it was Shammi himself who requested the ICC to suspend the board. The ICC board had an online meeting on Friday (November 10) to discuss the government’s involvement in Sri Lankan cricket. Shammi is in India for the World Cup. The ICC still recognises him as the president. The report also mentioned that Shammi is likely to join the ICC meeting in Ahmedabad after the World Cup concludes.

Sri Lankan cricket is in a shambles right now with political conflicts hampering the smooth functioning of the national cricket board. It has resulted in their team’s poor display on the field. After the poor World Cup 2023, some major decisions will have to be made from the team’s point of view, such as the new captain and the future of the current head coach Chris Silverwood. But before that, the Sri Lankan cricket board needs a makeover.
