BREAKING: IPL 2024 Start Date Finally Revealed!

IPL 2024

IPL 2024: The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to commence from March 22 and will be hosted entirely in India despite the upcoming general elections, announced IPL chairman Arun Dhumal on Tuesday.

Dhumal stated to The Indian Express, “We are aiming for a March 22 start date for the IPL 2024season.” He added that the schedule for the first 10 days of matches will be disclosed first, with the remaining fixtures to be announced once the dates for the general elections are finalized.

Explaining the cautious approach, Dhumal emphasized, “We want to avoid a scenario where we release the full IPL schedule, only to later find out that the security agency cannot provide security for certain venue games.” He continued, “Switching venues at the last minute poses significant logistical challenges and requires substantial behind-the-scenes work. Therefore, we have decided to announce only the initial games and will unveil the complete schedule once we have a clear understanding of which states will hold elections on specific dates.”

The dates for the Lok Sabha polls are expected to be declared in early March.

Responding to queries about the possibility of relocating the league due to the elections, Dhumal ruled out any overseas staging, stating, “It won’t happen overseas. That is why we are waiting for Lok Sabha election dates, so that we can plan the venues accordingly.”

This won’t be the first time the IPL coincides with general elections. In 2009, the second season was held in South Africa, while in 2014, the first 20 matches took place in the UAE before shifting to India.

In 2019, during the Lok Sabha polls, all IPL games were held in India. With the T20 World Cup scheduled to start on June 1, it is anticipated that the IPL will conclude by the end of May. Following recent tradition, the opening match will feature the finalists of the previous season – Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans.
