Ian Botham, the famous former England cricketer, recently had a close call with danger while on a fishing trip in Northern Australia. He was boarding a boat on the Moyle River when his flip-flops got caught in a rope, causing him to fall into the water. The river is known to be home to crocodiles and bull sharks, making the situation even more terrifying.
Luckily, Botham’s old friend and rival, former Australian cricketer Merv Hughes, was there. Hughes quickly pulled Botham back to safety. Botham only suffered some bruising along his torso but was otherwise fine. He later joked that he got out of the water faster than he fell in.
“Quite a few sets of eyes were having a peep at me, but I had no time to think about what was in the water,” he said.
Old Rival to the Rescue
The scary moment didn’t end there. Reports said that bull sharks were also swimming near the boat. But Botham kept his sense of humor about the whole thing. He posted a picture of a fish he caught during the trip on Instagram, saying,
“My catch of the day was the barra while I was nearly catch of the day for all the crocs and bull sharks. Thanks, boys, for getting me out.”
This latest adventure adds to the long-standing rivalry between Botham and Hughes. In the 1980s, the two cricketers had some fierce Ashes battles. One memorable moment was when Botham hit Hughes for 22 runs in a single over. Now, years later, they are teaming up again, this time as commentators for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Despite the close call, Botham is safe and still able to laugh about it, proving that even the greatest players can have some wild experiences off the field.
