AB de Villiers’ Shocking Attack on Hardik Pandya – Gautam Gambhir Fires Back

Ab De Villiars

Gautam Gambhir, former Indian cricketer and two-time IPL-winning skipper, has strongly criticized AB de Villiers for his recent comments regarding Hardik Pandya’s captaincy. De Villiers, a legendary South African batter, had expressed his views on Pandya’s leadership during the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Pandya, who returned to the Mumbai Indians this season as captain, has faced a challenging season, with the team being the first to get knocked out of the playoffs race and currently languishing at the ninth spot on the points table. De Villiers, along with other former cricketers like Kevin Pietersen, had criticized Pandya’s captaincy, suggesting it lacked genuineness and was ego-driven.

Gautam Gambhir’s Retort: Questioning De Villiers’ Leadership Credentials

In response, Gambhir questioned the credibility of de Villiers and Pietersen as leaders, highlighting their lackluster performances in leadership roles.

“When they themselves did captaincy [were captains], what were their own performances like? I do not think that whether it is Kevin Pietersen or AB de Villiers, there have ever been performances in their careers from a leadership point of view. Nothing,” Gautam Gambhir stated.

Gambhir also pointed out that de Villiers has not captained any IPL games and has not achieved much from a team perspective, unlike Pandya, who has won the IPL as a captain.

“I don’t think AB de Villiers has even captained any game in the IPL or ultimately achieved anything apart from his own scores. I do not think he has achieved anything from a team point of view. Hardik Pandya is still an IPL-winning captain,” Gambhir added.

Meanwhile, de Villiers attempted to clarify his comments, stating that when he referred to Pandya’s captaincy as not always genuine, he meant that it was a strategic approach to show the opposition that he is a force to reckon with. “The guy you saw on the field was in a way ‘an act’. Sometimes, you have to put up a front and show the opposition that you are a force to reckon with. That’s what Hardik Pandya does,” de Villiers explained.

The exchange highlights the different perspectives on leadership styles in cricket and the ongoing debates within the cricketing community regarding the effectiveness of certain approaches to captaincy.
